The term ‘Woodworm’ has become a generic name for the range of insects that make their home in domestic timber. By far the most common of these is the furniture beetle – a small brown insect that's about 3mm long when fully grown.

As with most of the wood boring insects, the furniture beetle lays her eggs in cracks and crevices of wood. When they become adults they eat their way out of the wood leaving a hole. As they breed the holes multiply and ultimately the timber’s more ‘aero’ than wood.

Our Treatment

Harrison Preservation Ltd delivers top-class solutions to resolve all types of insect damage to wood.

The main problems treating woodworm are;

·

identifying the species involved,

·

deciding whether the infestation is still active

·

deciding which timbers have been structurally weakened

All of these factors will ultimately influence the type of treatment carried out. For this reason our Surveyor will visit to investigate the affected areas. Based on their experienced analysis, we will then select the most appropriate treatment such as insecticide, fungal decay eradication, traditional or resin repair. We will then send you a clear report with a plan showing which areas require treatment and how we propose to solve the problem in the most effective manner.

Treatment of the Powderpost and Common Furniture Beetle is straightforward and usually spraying of all surfaces of the affected timber with an appropriate treatment, such as Triton, is sufficient. This resolution is highly effective and causes the minimum of inconvenience and disturbance for our clients.

However, for other types of woodworm common to the UK, including the infamous Deathwatch (pictured left) and House Longhorn Beetle, it is usually necessary for structurally-weakened timber to be removed and replaced with pre-treated timber.

Should it be required, our timber treatment service is also able to include all associated trade services, including specialist renovation plastering and joinery work, etc.
