Dry & Wet Rot

Wet Rot is a relatively common occurrence and can usually be dealt with by removing the source of dampness.

However, the true Dry Rot fungus (Serpula lacrymans) is serious and requires immediate attention to avoid extensive damage. It is malignant and will spread even through thick walls in search of timber to attack. Affected timber can be seen to be brown, dry and brittle with cuboidal fractures and a musty, fungal like smell. The spreading spores appear as fine tubules of a white or light grey appearance and are often seen with white fluffy growths called mycelium.

Our Treatment:
Dry rot should be dealt with swiftly and only by an experienced wood preservation specialist.

Treatment can be expensive and it is important therefore, that an outbreak is identified correctly. There are a number of diagnostic features and we look for the presence of several to ensure positive identification. Once an outbreak is confirmed it is absolutely imperative that all affected timber is cut out and removed. It is also essential that further entry of dampness is prevented. These principles hold whether the outbreak is small or extensive.

Harrison Preservation Ltd. offer a full service, including specialist fungicidal treatments and associated plastering, joinery, carpentry services, etc.
