Saving Oakmere Manor House |
Once a county house now a Beefeater restaurant, the staff had laid up and gone home after another busy evening. When they arrived the next morning they found part of the upstairs restaurant on the ground floor tables with a large hole in the ceiling. It turned out a pipe had been weeping under the floor which along with high humidity had caused an outbreak of dry rot. Harrison Preservation Ltd. were called in to rectify the damage. However, this was just the beginning....... The pictures below try to illustrate how the problems were overcome. Click any of them for greater detail |
Our first step is always to strip back the ceiling around the collapse until all the damaged timber and masonry have been exposed. Three weeks later we were still stripping and it was evident we were looking at an epidemic of wet and dry rot and all forms of damp. |

Naturally we were all keen to save the beautiful, ancient, listed oak staircase - until it made the decision for us by collapsing! |

Finally we reached the point when all evidence of damp, wet and dry rot had been eradicated. The picture on the left shows the new joists and roofing trusses we put in place. We treated all the new timber work to ensure maximum protection. |

Not many people know this but.........WW1 saw the crash of an L-31 Zeppelin on 1st October 1916 in the grounds of Oakmere House. This followed another Zeppelin crash, one month earlier, at nearby Cuffley. |
